City trees can make their surroundings cooler in more than one way. Their branches provide shade, while water released through their leaves helps cool the air. When trees shade buildings, they can reduce the demand for air conditioning. However, planting any available tree is not enough: the species must suit the local climate. Young trees also require regular maintenance after planting. A successful planting project therefore involves both choosing suitable trees and caring for them.
