You can read lessons and use practice activities without creating an English Ladder account.

Practice and browser preferences

News lessons offer speaking activities without a writing box. Quiz and grammar answers stay on the current page. The retired general learning-history feature, saved vocabulary lists, and saved grammar selections remain unavailable. Any records left by the retired saving feature can be removed through your browser’s site-data settings.

When you select Finish lesson, a completion marker for that story and level is saved in this browser. Colored circles show every level you have finished for that story in the dated lesson list and news archive, even when you switch levels. Select Completed again to mark the current level unfinished and remove only its circle. These markers contain no answers or notes, are not uploaded, and do not sync between browsers or devices. Clear this site’s data in your browser settings to remove them. If browser storage is unavailable, the marker lasts only on the current page.

Everyday English units have a Mark as completed button. It saves only a completion marker for that unit in this browser and shows a checkmark beside the unit icon in its heading and shortcut box. Select Completed again to remove the marker. These markers are not uploaded and do not sync between browsers or devices. If browser storage is unavailable, your change lasts only on the current page.

Your selected level and explanation language may still be stored in this browser. The vocabulary language buttons remember only your selected language, including Simplified Chinese or Brazilian Portuguese. Definitions are prepared before publication; clicking a language button does not send your reading or answers to an AI service.

English for Work does not save course drafts, answers, completion records, or reading history. Its lesson dots show your scroll position on the current page only. Earlier saved work-course drafts and progress are removed when you open an English for Work page, if browser settings permit removal. If browser storage is blocked, any old records remain unused and can be removed through your browser's site-data settings.

Your writing is not submitted for automatic grading. Use fictional details for work practice.

Optional AI practice

AI extension buttons copy published lesson material to your clipboard. They do not include your drafts, saved answers, or recordings, and English Ladder does not send the prompts to an AI service. If you paste a prompt into another service, that service handles it under its own terms. Review its privacy and pricing information and use fictional details. The prompts are optional; the regular lessons work without AI.

Audio and recording

The optional practice recorder requests microphone permission only when you press Record. Recordings are kept in the current page for playback and are not uploaded by English Ladder. Leaving the page releases the microphone. The older model-voice control uses the browser's speech service; its implementation can vary by browser and device. It is optional.

Visits and external services

The site includes Cloudflare Web Analytics for aggregate traffic information. The site does not attach practice answers, notes, or recordings to custom analytics events. Cloudflare explains its data practices here. The site is hosted on Cloudflare; hosting providers may process connection information such as IP addresses in serving the site. External links, including English Road and correction reports on GitHub, have their own privacy practices.

Daily lesson generation happens separately from your browser practice. It uses news sources and external generation services; your drafts are not included.
